Any character who tries to follow the train tracks off the island might get about halfway before suddenly hearing a train whistle, then blacking out and waking up on the station platform.

Someone who tries to take a boat out will, if they row out past a certain distance, suddenly find themselves back at the boathouse. The same goes for people who try to swim out, assuming they don't drown first.
